5. Visiting the Road of Freedom Today

The Physical Route

The Road of Freedom can be followed physically along the ancient Cremonese route, connecting the three memorial sites:
  • Starting point: Monument to the Fallen of Curtatone and Montanara (Quattro Venti area)
  • Intermediate point: Monument to the Martyrs of Aldriga (Valletta Aldriga, Curtatone)
  • Final point: Commemorative area of the Martyrs of Belfiore (today Mantua, historically part of Curtatone)

Visitor Information

All three sites are accessible and open to visitors. It is recommended to dedicate at least half a day to complete the full route, allowing time to pause respectfully at each monument and reflect on the historical significance of these places.

The route can be completed by car, bicycle, or, for the more fit, on foot, following the local roads that trace the path of the ancient Cremonese.

Educational Value

This route has particular educational importance for younger generations. As noted in the introduction to the 1958 commemoration: “We want to simply tell those who remember and those who have forgotten, but especially the young, who fortunately have not known the tragedy of war, our history.”

Schools and cultural associations can organize guided visits along the Road of Freedom, transforming the study of history into a direct and engaging experience.
