Dante Mortet - Artisan - Bottega Mortet
Today we are here to witness an important event, precisely the anniversary of 29 May 1848, the battle of Curtatone and Montanara. This is why I was called upon to create a prize that could, on this day, identify the event a little bit in a sculpture, so something that would remain. We invented something that was not there and that is precisely the Witness, something that could be useful to tell this story, but above all to pass it on. So our witness will precisely tell us, whenever we pass it on to another, this story. An important story, made of values, made up of men who gave their lives for this country. Here, here today we will pass the baton of the story to an important person, Dr. Gabrielli, whom next year we invite him to return and pass it on to another, who will continue to tell in the future. This is a unique fact, no prize in the world today has been imagined and designed to be able to then pass it on to another. So the witness given to Curtatone is also a small must, a small unicum of its kind.
Franco Gabrielli - Chief of Police - Prefect of Rome
I don't deny that awards are always a pleasure and then it's always nice to capture the spirit that motivates them. Sometimes the awards are more or less ritual events, but instead I heard from the mayor's words, when his intention participated in me, that there was also an emotional involvement, which I always consider to be an important thing between institutions and between people who, however, in their role, contribute to the good of the country.
Carlo Bottani - Mayor - City of Curtatone
We are very satisfied with the ten days of celebrations for the 170th Curtatone Montanara. They could not have ended in the best way with the presence of the prefect Franco Gabrielli, who gave additional depth to our celebrations with his lectio magistralis and gave us prestige and above all he gave us the great certainty of having taken the right path with the establishment of the prize to relaunch this prestigious founding date of our country at
national level.

The Witness to History: an award that is handed down

At the heart of the celebrations for the 170th anniversary of the Battle of Curtatone and Montanara, a profoundly symbolic and meaningful ceremony took place: the presentation of the Curtatone and Montanara Prize to Dr. Franco Gabrielli, Prefect of Rome and former Chief of Police.

The award was conceived and created by the artist and master craftsman Dante Mortet, who gave shape to a unique object of its kind: “the Witness”. Not a simple commemorative sculpture, but a symbol to be handed down over time. An object designed to tell and preserve the memory of a fundamental historical event and, at the same time, to pass from hand to hand, carrying with it the values of courage, commitment and love for the country.

The ceremony represented the culmination of the celebrations, confirming the value of the initiative and the desire to give new life to a founding date in our history. The award was conceived as an annual recognition to personalities who have distinguished themselves for their contribution to the good of the country, inaugurating a new tradition.

With the first edition, the Curtatone and Montanara Prize opens a journey made of memory, commitment and gratitude, where history is present and continues to inspire the future.
